Chalchiuhtlicue

she of the jade skirt, lady of living water

water

Chalchiuhtlicue rules the lakes, rivers, and springs, and the newborn are bathed in her name at the start of their journey; to dream of her is to be carried on a gentle current, cleansed of the day, and set softly down where the water knows to take you.

Fragments

Her waters are strung with jade and turquoise, and midwives called on her to wash each new soul clean of its first darkness before laying it against the world.

When her age ended she wept a flood for fifty-two years, and those who had grown proud were turned to fish and swept out into the shining, forgetful sea.
