Huitzilopochtli

the hummingbird of the south, sun of war

fire

Huitzilopochtli was born armed and full-grown to defend his mother, then rose as the noon sun that must fight each night to be reborn; to dream of him is to gather the fierce, narrow courage that carries you through the dark until morning.

Fragments

His people followed an eagle upon a cactus until they found the promised island, and there they raised a city to the sun that would not stand still.

On the mountain of the serpent he burst forth armored in turquoise, the fire-serpent Xiuhcoatl in his hand, and scattered the four hundred stars who came to kill him.
