Coatlicue

she of the serpent skirt, devouring mother

earth

Coatlicue wears a skirt of writhing serpents and a necklace of hearts and hands, the earth herself who bears all life and takes it all back; to dream of her is to feel held by something vast and unsentimental, the ground that made you and will one day close over you.

Fragments

A ball of feathers drifted down from the sky and touched her as she swept the temple, and so the sun of war quickened within the mountain of her body.

When her own children turned on her in fury, she was undone and remade at the summit, a stone colossus with two serpents rising where her severed head had been.
