Itzpapalotl

the obsidian butterfly, clawed star-mother

aether

Itzpapalotl is a fearsome skeletal goddess whose wings are edged with knives of black glass, ruling a paradise of the honored dead; to dream of her is to feel the strange nearness of beauty and danger, and to learn that some soft, bright things are also armed.

Fragments

A star and a devouring thing at once, she falls from the darkness on flint-tipped wings, and where she lands the dry brush kindles and burns to a fine white ash.

She rules Tamoanchan, the misty garden at the world's beginning where the first tree stands broken, and her wings glitter with the flint that cuts souls free of their bodies.
