Dreaming of a letter
Where a phone is immediate, a letter has travelled. To dream of one is usually to dream of something arriving from a distance: news, an old connection, a communication that has been in transit longer than you realised.
Unopened, unsent and unreadable letters are the three great forms, and each is quite distinct. What state the letter was in tends to be the whole meaning.
If your dream was more particular
An unopened letter
News you have not let yourself receive. This form tends to accompany something you suspect and have avoided confirming — a result, an answer, a conversation you can predict. The dream usually leaves it sealed on purpose.
A letter you cannot read
The words will not hold still, or are in an unknown hand. It generally points at a message you have received and genuinely cannot interpret — something someone said that you have turned over without understanding.
A letter you never sent
Among the most poignant dream objects. It usually marks words you have not said to someone, often to a person you can no longer say them to. These dreams are common in grief.
Where the myth comes from
Writing is a gift with consequences. Thoth invents it and, in Plato's telling of the Egyptian story, is warned that it will weaken memory rather than strengthen it — the first recorded worry about a new medium. Nabu holds the stylus and writes the tablet of destinies, which is to say that in Mesopotamia what is written is what happens.
Saraswatī is speech and learning and the river all at once, and everything that flows carries. Myth treats the written word as something with force of its own: once set down, it acts. A letter in a dream carries that weight — it is not a conversation, it is a thing that has been committed.
Questions to sit with
- What news have you avoided opening?
- What did someone say that you still cannot read?
- What have you never sent?

Dreams close to this one
Dream meanings are reflective, not medical or predictive. If a dream troubles you often, be gentle with yourself — and talk to someone you trust.
