Odin keeps two ravens, Huginn and Muninn — thought and memory — and sends them out over the world each dawn to bring back everything that is happening. He admits in one poem that he fears more for Muninn's return: he can survive losing thought, but not memory.
The Mórrígan appears as a crow over battlefields, and to see her there is to know how the day will end. In Chinese myth ten sun-crows once rose together and scorched the world until Hòu Yì shot nine of them down. Wherever the crow appears it is close to knowledge, and often close to the moment things turn.
