Ninhursag

lady of the stony hills, mother of the living

earth

Ninhursag is the great mother who shapes life from clay and quickens the wild herds upon her hills, healer and midwife of gods and men; to dream of her is to be gathered back into the warm ground and made, gently, whole again.

Fragments

She pinched the first people from river clay and breathed the hills into them, so that every mortal carries a little of her stony patience and her softness both.

When a god fell ill from eating forbidden flowers, she set him upon her lap and grew from each of his aches a small new deity, until his whole body was healed of its grief.
