Dreaming of a lion
Where the wolf is instinct, the lion is authority. A lion in a dream is rarely sneaking; it is present, it is not hiding, and the dream usually places you in relation to it — facing it, riding it, being ignored by it, or being it.
That relation is the reading. Lions tend to appear around questions of power: your own, or someone else's over you. Fear and admiration are often both in the dream at once, which is exactly how people feel about authority.
If your dream was more particular
A lion facing you
The confrontation dream, and it is more often about authority than about being eaten. It tends to arrive when you are standing in front of something powerful — a person, an institution, a decision — and the dream is measuring whether you hold your ground.
A caged lion
Power that is contained and visibly should not be. This form usually points at something forceful in your own life that has been shut away — an ambition, an anger, a capability that your circumstances have no room for.
Being a lion
Occupying the animal rather than meeting it. People wake from this one feeling unusually solid. It tends to follow a period of finally taking up space, or precede one where you are about to need to.
Where the myth comes from
Sekhmet is a lioness and the fiercest thing in the Egyptian pantheon — sent to punish humanity, and so effective that the gods had to dye beer red and trick her into drinking an entire lake of it to make her stop. Her other name is the Lady of Terror and her priests were physicians.
Inanna rides a lion and stands on two more; Durga's mount carries her into a battle no god could win. What these figures share is that the lion is never the danger in the story — it is the vehicle of someone who is. To dream of one is often to be near the question of who is driving.
Questions to sit with

- What power of yours is caged?
- Where do you need to hold your ground?
