The museum explains that lantern-patterned textiles were often used as seasonal decoration for the annual Lantern Festival, held on the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, while the cranes brought their own auspicious associations. This is a documented festival and textile context, not a universal rule that red or hanging lanterns predict joy.
An account published by the Government of Japan describes toro nagashi during Obon: candlelit lanterns are floated on water on the festival's last day, and in the tradition described, spirits follow them back to their world. The practice belongs to a particular Japanese memorial setting and varies by place. It should be distinguished from the Chinese Lantern Festival and from a dreamer's ordinary camping or household light.
