The easy version, and worth taking at face value. A dog that greets you tends to mark loyalty and protection present in your life, or wanted. People often wake from these dreams comforted and a little lonely, which is itself information about what is being reflected.
A dog barking at you
Barking is warning rather than attack — the dog's job at the threshold. This form often accompanies a sense that something needs your attention, or a boundary you have crossed or are about to. Ask what has been trying to get your notice loudly enough that you have started ignoring it.
A dog biting you
When loyalty turns, the dream lands hard. It commonly follows a betrayal or a fear of one, particularly from someone close — the bite matters because of who did it. It can also point to your own faithfulness turning on you: a commitment that has begun to take pieces out of you.
A lost or dying dog
Among the saddest dreams people report, and rarely about a dog. It tends to mark loyalty ending, a companionship you are losing, or your own capacity for devotion feeling worn out. If you have lost a dog in waking life, it is grief doing its ordinary work.
Where the myth comes from
Dogs guard the door of the dead almost everywhere. Cerberus keeps the gate of Hades; Anubis with his jackal head presides over embalming and leads souls to the scales; the Norse Garmr howls at the mouth of Hel. In Hindu tradition, Yama keeps two four-eyed dogs who watch the road, and a dog follows Yudhiṣṭhira all the way to heaven's gate and turns out to be a god who was testing him.
The other side of the dog in myth is unwavering loyalty — the animal that recognises its master after twenty years, that will not be turned back, that waits. This is the tension a dream dog usually carries: the same creature that guards can also block, and the loyalty that follows you can also be something you cannot shake.
