Where the myth comes from
UNESCO describes the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove in Nigeria as a living religious landscape through which the Osun River meanders. The river is regarded as the spiritual abode of Osun, and shrines, artworks, priests, festivals, and continuing worship connect water, place, community, and Yoruba identity. This context should not be flattened into a generic claim that every dream river is a goddess.
In Book 6 of Virgil's Aeneid, rivers mark the boundary of the Roman literary underworld, and Charon controls the ferry crossing. Passage depends on burial, permission, and guidance. The Osun River's living sacred geography and Virgil's poetic afterlife are fundamentally different contexts; their contrast shows why a dream river's name, use, and community matter.
