Rusalka

the water maiden, drowned and singing

water

The Rusalka is the restless spirit of a girl lost to the water, who rises in the green weeks to comb her hair on the riverbank and lure the wandering close; to dream of her is to feel the pull of a sweetness that is also a depth, and to weigh how far you will lean.

Fragments

In the green week she climbs into the willows and swings there in the moonlight, and the fields she dances through come up thick and heavy with grain.

Her song is soft as riverweed and just as tangling; follow it too far into the reeds and the water will fold quietly over the place where you stood.
