Brigid

the bright one, keeper of the flame

fire

Brigid tends the fires of the forge, the hearth, and the poet's tongue; to dream of her is to feel some banked ember in you asked to be fed again, so that what you make might warm someone through the night.

Fragments

Nineteen sisters keep her sacred fire and on the twentieth night she tends it herself, so that in a thousand years the flame has never once gone cold.

Where her cloak touched the frozen ground, snowdrops opened, and the first green of the year unfurled beneath the last of the snow.
