Keys could also mark human religious office. Research on Greek temple key-bearers traces inscriptions and images in which holding the temple key signaled priestly authority and duty. That history complicates the modern shortcut 'key equals answer': a key may represent custody, accountability, and the right to control access, not merely a puzzle solved.
