Where the myth comes from
In the account attributed to Apollodorus, Ariadne gives Theseus a thread before he enters the labyrinth; he fastens it at the door and uses it to find his way out after killing the Minotaur. In this particular Greek story, thread functions as a deliberately laid navigational record — an aid made useful by planning and another person's help.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian explains that Inka khipus used cords of different lengths, colors, twists, and knots to encode quantitative information for records such as taxes and labor. Their surviving complexity, and ongoing study of whether they carried information beyond accounting, shows that strings can organize knowledge without implying the Greek labyrinth or a universal symbol of destiny.
